Measure Door Hardware

A pre-order measurement checklist for hinges, locks, cylinders, closers, and plates.

Photograph first; remove second

Take one full-door photo, one close view from each side, and one edge view. Put a ruler in at least one close photo so scale is preserved.

The measurements that usually control fit

  • Door: width, height, thickness, material, handing, and any fire-rating label.
  • Hinge: open leaf height and width, leaf thickness, corner radius, hole pattern, and pin style.
  • Lock: backset, cross-bore diameter, edge-bore dimensions, door thickness, handing, and function.
  • Cylinder: cylinder type, body length, cam or tailpiece, keyway, and finish.
  • Closer: mounting-hole pattern, body size, arm type, mounting position, and door width.
  • Plate: overall width and height, fastener clearance, edge clearance, and finish.

Match the measurement method used by the manufacturer. Nominal sizes and actual dimensions are not always the same.
