ASSA ABLOY says Level will continue operating and that it intends to develop, sell, and support Level locks. It also said the restructuring should not affect current users or customer support, according to SecurityInfoWatch’s account of the restructuring and company response.

That statement describes current intent, not an indefinite commitment to operate Level’s cloud. It does not guarantee continued app availability, firmware and security updates, replacement parts, warranty service, ownership transfers, or recommissioning after a factory reset.

Level Is Still Operating, but Its Cloud Has No Long-Term Guarantee

ASSA ABLOY acquired Level Home in 2024 and confirmed a restructuring in June 2026. Reporting indicated that most Level employees had been laid off, including co-founders John Martin and Ken Goto and much of the engineering team.

AppleInsider’s analysis found no reason for owners to expect immediate failure or replace working locks solely because of the restructuring. It distinguished local locking from online app control and status updates.

The unresolved issue is maintenance over time. Cloud systems, mobile apps, firmware, integrations, and support processes require continuing technical work. Layoffs do not prove that a particular service will fail, but ASSA ABLOY has not supplied a binding end-of-life policy answering:

The interior thumbturn or paddle also remains a mechanical control, although neither method can overcome a damaged cylinder, obstructed bolt, or badly aligned door.

Test the key rather than merely confirming that one exists. With the door open, verify that it extends and retracts the bolt smoothly. Repeat with the door closed while another entry route remains available. A bolt that moves freely with the door open but binds when closed points to door or strike alignment rather than cloud trouble.

Keep a usable key somewhere accessible from outside the locked property. A key stored only inside does not protect someone arriving with a dead phone, failed credential, or depleted lock battery.

Apple Home and Matter Should Retain Basic Local Control

Compatible Level locks already added to Apple HomeKit or commissioned into Matter should retain basic local locking and unlocking if Level’s cloud later becomes unavailable, according to the restructuring reporting. That expectation is conditional, not a manufacturer guarantee covering every model, revision, or future software state.

Local control means a command can travel through the configured home ecosystem without relying on Level’s cloud for the basic bolt operation. It does not establish that the same lock can be controlled from another city or that status, notifications, automations, and guest features will continue unchanged.

Remote Apple operation generally requires a compatible Apple home hub. Matter installations may require an appropriate controller and Thread infrastructure. Some voice services and automations can still depend on internet services even when basic local lock and unlock remain available.

Existing operation also does not prove that the lock could be paired from scratch after a permanent service closure. Factory resets, ownership changes, replacement-phone setup, account authentication, and credential recovery can use different systems from ordinary local commands.

Remote operation and some advanced functions require suitable hubs, bridges, controllers, or internet access. Remote Apple control requires a compatible Apple home hub, while other Matter platforms need an appropriate Matter-over-Thread hub controller.

Those are Lock Pro claims. They should not be generalized to Level Lock+, Level Bolt, Level Lock, or Level Lock – Touch Edition. The available evidence does not provide a complete compatibility matrix covering every model and hardware revision.

Identify the exact product in the Level Home app and on the device or packaging. Record whether it has been commissioned into Matter, whether it appears in Apple Home, and whether Level Connect, an Apple home hub, Thread border router, Matter controller, Ring device, or another bridge is involved.

The same caution applies to keypad entry. The supplied evidence does not establish model-specific keypad support or whether every keypad function would remain independent of Level’s cloud. Treat it as unverified until you confirm the exact accessory, credential type, and current offline behavior.

Different Outages Remove Different Functions

A household power outage does not directly drain the battery inside the lock. It can instead disable the router, Level Connect, Apple home hub, Thread border router, or another controller. The lock may remain powered and usable at the door while becoming unreachable remotely.

A temporary internet-disconnection test can identify current local paths, but it cannot perfectly simulate a permanent cloud closure, app removal, account failure, or future recommissioning problem.

A Depleted Lock Battery Leaves the Key Available

Level’s official guidance says the conventional physical key remains available when the lock battery is depleted, while motorized operations may be unsuccessful. Level locks use one non-rechargeable 3-volt lithium CR2 battery. Rechargeable CR2 batteries are incompatible and can damage the lock, according to Level’s official battery guide.

Avoid factory-resetting, unpairing, deleting integrations, or removing the lock from Apple Home or Matter merely to see whether it can be added again. Those actions test recommissioning, which may require pairing records, account services, or other dependencies not needed for routine local operation.

If electronic operation is weak, test the bolt with the door open. Smooth movement while open and binding while closed indicate an alignment problem. Correcting the door, strike, or installation can improve reliability and battery life more effectively than repeatedly replacing batteries.

Replacement Is Necessary Only for a Concrete Failure

There is no evidence-based reason to replace a functioning Level lock solely because of the restructuring. Replacement becomes reasonable when the lock has an unrepairable mechanical fault, persistent motor failure after a known-good battery and alignment correction, or loss of an access method the household genuinely requires.

It may also be justified if future cloud or integration changes remove an essential function, support and replacement parts become inadequate, or the lock cannot provide dependable entry for residents, carers, guests, or emergency needs.

For now, the defensible plan is to retain a tested physical key, keep the specified battery available, verify existing local Apple or Matter control, document every hub and integration, and avoid unnecessary resets.
